What would we do without cheese?

My boy won't eat. Never really has. These days are worse then usual.

He will eat a slice of cheese, cheetos and sometimes carrots and chicken nuggets. That's it.

Meal times are difficult and very frustrating. We do mental cartwheels when he actually eats a decent supper. Oh.. I forgot... he won't eat anything before 10:30... so no real breakfast.

If it wasn't for pediasure... we'd be in trouble.

Jake also has some texture issues. If you go from cheetos to carrots, you're gonna have to give him about three bites of carrots until he will actually swallow it and not gag.

We have a feeding therapist but haven't seen her in a while because things had gotten better.
Now, I can't wait till after Christmas to see her. I just want to walk in... and say... "Here... YOU do it!"

Today for example. He didn't eat his veggies, his fruit or even a bite of pizza I bought just to get him to eat. Jake had me hopeful for a few brief moments. The bite would get in his is mouth.. I would think, "ah.. success!!!" and then he'd spit it out.

For lunch he had a piece of cheese, goldfish and a pediasure.

Tonight: no mac, no carrots, no cheetos.... just two pieces of cheese and pediasure.

Guess what?? Jake is constipated. Hello miralax... meet cheese....and pediasure. I think you all are gonna be buddies for quite some time.

Yep... what would we do without cheese?

nDoes being 2 years old have anything to do with his refusal to eat what is good for him. Our Marty will have nothing to do with carrots or other veggies, but will eat every fruit we offer to him. The fruit is as good as veggies are for him. He does like cheese also. He will eat homemade angel hair pasta with meat sauce for every meal if we served it to him. I just brown the meat and add a jar of Ragu sauce, simmer than add the pasta. He also loves tapioca or plain puddings in all flavors. Will no longer drink his milk unless chocolate syrup has been added.

I tell you all of this so that you will know that little two year old boys often show very little interest in eating......probably because they know how it angers their Mom. After raising 2 sons and caring for 5 grandsons, I no longer let eating time be a hassle. They will eat when they are hungry. Relax Jen and go find yourself a piece of chocolate, better days are coming.

Maybe I forgot to tell you also that I babysit Marty 5 days a week and feed him breakfast and lunch. I am well aware of what he will eat or will not eat. Last week he couldn't get enough mac and cheese, today he wouldn't touch it.

Love yas and hope things improve with the feeding therapist coming back on the scene.

i think some of what you described is just normal for that age. every one of mine has gone through stages where they eat a certain food one day, but not the next.

and can i just say that cammie stuffs in cheese by the handfuls (she prefers shredded to slices), so i feel your pain.... :)

and seriously, 10:30 is still morning time. if you go to mcd's they're just finishing breakfast....so it counts! at my house, whatever time we eat our first meal, it serves as breakfast!!!!!

Jen-
I have to agree that it is some age appropriate. Knowing they have a little control over what they like/don't like... will/won't eat.

Does he do cold?
You can buy Gogurt and freeze it and get some yogurt in him... it is still dairy... but it's not cheese. It is like eating a popsicle only thicker... good on growing teeth too.

When Silas was his age he ate nothing but Dwight Yokum's Chicken Lickin Chicken Fries =)... and for 2 years now he has eaten bologna and "stick" cheese EVERY DAY for lunch.

I wish you luck... nothing makes you turn gray or pull out all your hair faster than the just not knowing and always trying something new.

Jennifer, all very good comments from the others. For WS kiddos the texture issue is a major hurdle. I would keep up the oral motor exercises, this helps with speech as well as eating. I remember thinking once after exhausting a number of options, i gave Lila mashed potato. she hated it. I asked "how can a kid hate mashed potato!!" i about lost it. All in all she preferred 'hard' food as opposed to "soft" food and we had to really watch her to get her to chew it. oral motor exercises, again very important. can't stress it enough. they hate it but you got to do it. BTW thanks so much for the Christmas card it is wonderful! Have a great holiday and try not to stress on the eating, he is getting what he needs maybe try to push the fiber so he is not so constipated.

Jen, I haven't been to your blog for a while.
I see we have some issues.
Jake will not starve if you hold back on the pediasure (sp) for a day.
Offer him fruits and vegetables or whole wheat snacks. If he won't eat any of that just wait. He will get hungry. He will eat. No snacks inbetween meals, not even healthful ones. I say again he will not starve. W.S. or not this little boy knows what he wants. He LOVES his milk. This might mean a few days of no rest for you and Dave.
The best thing you can do for Jake and yourselves is get him to eat at mealtime, not eat 24-7 like he wants to. Sorry Jake it all can't be your way.
Love You All
